a brand is more than a logo.
A logo is a signature. Your brand is everything people experience when they deal with you, and that’s what they remember.
People can be cynical about branding. Often that’s because they think it means a logo and a colour palette. Those things matter, but they’re the visible tip of something much bigger.
the logo takes on the experience
Think of a café with a lovely logo and poor service. Before long, that logo doesn’t make you think “lovely”. It makes you think “slow coffee and a long wait”. A logo becomes shorthand for whatever people experience. That’s why the experience is the brand.
consistency builds trust
When I studied graphic design, the lesson that stuck was consistency. A strong brand says what makes you different, and it says it the same way everywhere: on your website, in your proposals, on the phone and in person. Every consistent touchpoint adds a little more trust.
a brand works on the inside too
A brand isn’t only for customers. When your team understands what you stand for, they make better decisions without needing to ask. They deliver the same promise, whoever the customer speaks to. For a small business, that’s how you grow without losing what made you good.
it helps you through change
When a business grows, merges or takes a new direction, a clear brand is a guide for everyone. It explains how you do things and why, so change feels like progress rather than confusion.
so, is your brand working?
Ask a few customers to describe you in three words. If those words match what you’d hope for, your brand is working. If they don’t, it’s time to look beyond the logo.
