diy branding or a professional? an honest answer.
Canva, Adobe Express and AI tools make it easy to design your own logo. So when is DIY good enough, and when does it cost you more?
There was a time when designing your own brand meant clip art in Word or wrestling with expensive design software. Today, tools like Canva and Adobe Express, and a growing list of AI platforms, promise professional-looking results in minutes. Understandably, that’s appealing.
where DIY helps
- It’s cheap or free.
- No design experience is needed.
- Templates make it quick.
- You can work on it anywhere, with your team.
For a quick social post or an internal document, these tools are great. I use them myself.
where DIY falls short
- You look like everyone else. Templates are used by thousands of businesses, so standing out is hard.
- The thinking gets skipped. A tool can make a logo. It can’t tell you what makes you different or who you’re for.
- It doesn’t scale. Files that look fine on screen can fall apart on signage, print or a vehicle.
- Consistency slips. Without guidelines, every new piece drifts a little further from the last.
the honest answer
If you’re testing an idea on a shoestring, DIY can get you started. If you’re building a business you want people to trust, invest in the foundations: a clear proposition and a distinctive identity. Then use the DIY tools to produce everyday content within those guidelines. That way you get the best of both.
And if you want to use AI tools in your marketing without losing what makes you sound like you, that’s exactly the kind of thing I help with.
