What does ‘Stay Alert’ mean?

For that matter what has ‘Stay at Home’ meant? Go to the park to meet friends for a picnic? Drive to a distant beauty spot for a walk? Or even, in one report, drive over 100 miles at 110 miles per hour for a loaf of bread (according to the offender)?

If the observance for ‘Stay at Home’ is matched for ‘Stay Alert’ perhaps we will see people bumping into each other whilst on their mobile phones, inadvertently hugging each other when they have one-to-one meetings and opening up at shared workplaces.

That’s the trouble with messaging and communication it is open to individual or even herd (!) interpretation.

We have spent our careers helping organisations and individuals get their message across and we know it is not easy, even with the small audiences we have to deal with. The government, after all, has an audience of 50 million plus.

There are many variables to deal with. Who are you wanting to influence? What state of mind are they in? What is your message? What is the tone of voice you want or need to adopt? What do you want your audience to do and think as a result of the communication? How might what you propose saying be interpreted?

I think we can agree it is a bit of a minefield, especially with an audience the size of England. Perhaps we ought to cut the government some slack?
